The Emilio Pucci Success Story: A Brief Biography

Emilio Pucci stori
Today, Emilio Pucci’s name is one of the most widely recognized in fashion. The Italian designer was born in Naples in 1914 and today his name can still be seen all over the world. Emilio Pucci is also a brand name that rings not only through the ears of fashionistas, famous designers and runways but also biographies. In fact, the “Made in Italy” signature style of luxury fashion is based on the Emilio Pucci biography. But you don’t have to love reading thick, dusty old books to learn about the Emilio Pucci success story. The interesting tale can be told right here in a matter of minutes.

The Emilio Pucci Biography

The story of Emilio Pucci the brand starts at the very beginning with the man. Emilio Pucci was born to an illustrious family in 1914. Back then the Marquis Emilio Pucci di Barsento family was an embodiment of glamor and jet set lifestyles of post-war Italy. The American educated Pucci was not only well-traveled, he was also multilingual, an Olympic skier, an aristocrat and an air force pilot.

However, with the Italian economy in ruins, Pucci like many others had to work hard just to make ends meet. So, he made money teaching Italian, giving ski lessons and also designing outfits. In 1947 one ski outfit caught the eye of a photographer. Then, it was ultimately published in Harper's Bazaar USA which gave rise to what today is remembered as a fashion phenomenon. It is this serendipitous moment where everything began and the rest is history.

The Original Design Vision

Emilio’s holistic approach to fashion was most apparent in his sensual designs for women. They allowed the natural curves of the body to flow effortlessly with the piece. His creations developed a signature look known to take any woman from day to night without the need to change much more than simple accessories. After showing only a few of his collections to buyers in Florence along with international press in 1951, Emilio Pucci continued to create a name for himself developing couture style - each piece more stunning than the next.
From seaside cocktail party dresses to high-rolling jet-set day wear and even lifestyle signature accessories, the designer was unparalleled as a colorist. Creating stunning landscapes of color drawn mostly from his life in the Mediterranean, Emilio Pucci developed a couture look (minus the staggering price tag). It’s this vision of holistic design that made the brand so famous. But he was not limited to fashion. Pucci’s creative vision extended beyond clothing and lingerie to eyewear, fragrances and even interiors. He also lent his design vision to uniforms, logos for space missions and luxury automobiles.

Pucci: The Signature Style

In the 1950’s Emilio Pucci started developing his signature prints. Inspired by the world around him, Pucci created graphics and abstract designs that included geometric patterns incorporating themes seen in Sicilian mosaics, heraldic banners, Bali Batiks and African motifs. This was the type of work that earned him the name, “Prince of Prints.” Each one of his prints was designed with a unique color infusion pattern that created a style recognizable of Pucci even today. The energetic color along with an emotional use of geometric patterns is how the  “Made in Italy” luxury fashions began. You may see the fashion footprint anywhere from your everyday lifestyle to the runway.
Emilio Pucci is the same today as it was back when he had the original vision of ready-to-wear styles and brightly colored couture collections. However, today the trailblazing brand includes a range of apparel, handbags, leather goods, eyewear, footwear, beachwear and silk accessories. Co-branding with Guerlain and Veuve Clicquot along with the collaborations with Rossignol, Wolford, Parfums Luxe and Bisazza created an impact in the industry. And today, you can still clearly see the overall force of the “Made in Italy” style throughout Pucci’s luxury sportswear and other fashion work.

Changing Hands for Today’s Fashion

Emilio’s daughter, Laudomia Pucci became involved with the brand in the 1980’s. Over time, it was Laudomia that ended up taking over the business in 1992 after Emilio’s passing. By April 2000, the company ultimately merged with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, a French luxury group now with 67% of the company. The family retains interest in the company but manages the brand with the help of the Group’s financial support and extensive knowledge.
Millennials Love Pucci

With a global network that includes more than 50 boutiques, the Pucci brand and its signature joyful color can be seen all over the world. From the streets of Florence where it all began with Emilio Pucci the legacy continues to influence the next generations. Laudomia Pucci, daughter of the founder leads the way with new fun, colorful and signature styles to keep the brand alive.
“To do those things today, you have to give them a twist and a dose of fashion creativity. If not, the brand becomes like Uniqlo or whoever does fantastic things for very cheap prices,” Laudomia explains. “So today you have very tough competition, while in those early days, my father was the only one. It’s not enough today to just do a pant in a patterned fabric: You have to put it in context and make it cool – that is a fashion twist.”

LVMH, the fashion juggernaut that owns Pucci, cannot compete with brands like Gucci, dominating the industry in profits. However, the lasting name in the luxury “Made in Italy” fashion niche is priceless. So, look for millennials to lead the way into a new world of creativity that is alive with patterns from classic Pucci heritage. These new versions will aim to transform everyday life into something new for everyone.
Emilio Pucci wasn't just a designer. His colorful creations helped to develop an entire signature style synonymous with the “Made in Italy” lifestyle. Now immortalized, the Pucci pop of color has become a luxury fashion must have. Don’t miss out on this coveted, classic and oh-so couture look birthed in Italy and worn all over the world.
