Accessories can greatly improve an outfit’s style and your appearance. They add a touch of flair and color that clothing alone can’t necessarily pull off. You can wear one accessory or many, but not all accessories are created equal, and many require a more creative touch to wearing them. Wearing an accessory wrong is worse than not wearing an accessory at all…

There are many accessories to choose from and many ways to wear them. One such accessory is the scarf. Not just a piece of fabric, but a timeless accessory with many different style options to choose from.

Depending on your motive or mood, a scarf can help complete your outfit and your life.

A scarf is a piece of fabric or material that is generally worn around the neck for warmth and style. You can also wear a scarf around your arm or waist; this is more for the aesthetic look than function. Scarves offer protection from the sun and can be worn for religious, cultural, or traditional reasons.

Whatever reason you choose to wear a scarf, it is a fashion statement on its own that can be left up to interpretation.

Scarves can be long or short, thick or thin, and some even have texture. With so many varieties, there is almost an infinite number of ways to wear a scarf. By now, you may be asking yourself how to tie a hair scarf, we’ll teach you how shortly.
Scarves, and other accessories have been worn since ancient times. The garment was originally used to keep clean rather than warm in Ancient Rome, it was used to wipe the dirt and sweat from the face and neck in hot weather. Men originally wore scarves; they would tie the fabric to their belt or hang it around their neck. In China, scarves were used to identify officers or the rank of warriors. And today, scarves are ornamental pieces that serve a small function, but a big fashion statement.

Over the centuries, the scarf served many purposes in different cultures and underwent many modifications to suit the climate of different countries. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that the scarf became a fashion accessory, for both men and women. Today, scares have become an essential clothing accessory that offers style and versatility. Most people own a scarf or two, but rarely wear them because they don’t know how to. We’re here to solve that problem.

A scarf can be worn many different ways, not just around the neck. And people from different eras wore scarves differently. The way you choose to wear a scarf will identify with a certain look or time, especially the designer of the scarf.

Scarves can make or break an outfit; the key is to know the scarf itself and how to wear it.

For example, the 20th century saw a unique style of wearing scarves that is rarely seen today, unfortunately. The women of the 1920s and 1930s wore the scarf as a turban; this was a popular and fashionable look that was worn by many celebrities of the time, which women later emulated and still do today.

The turban style was often worn by celebs such as Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford; they made it their signature look and passed it along to the pop culture of the day.

Today celebrities still influence fashion, including how they wear a scarf.

You don’t have to be a celebrity to wear a headscarf, just be curious and creative.

If you want to pull off a vintage look with a scarf, try the turban. This was a classic and conservative look back in the day, but still a popular and timeless look today. Or try a simple head wrap with long tails coming down the side. These two looks are classic vintage fashion; try incorporating them into your outfits.

Speaking of wearing scarves, how exactly do you wear one?

That’s a good question and an important part of properly wearing a scarf. Let’s take a look at some popular ways to wear a scarf and learn how to tie a scarf around your head. Learning this ahead of time helps save you time and help avoid getting frustrated. Don’t be too serious and have fun, after all, its fashion.
In keeping with the turban theme, you can accomplish this vintage look with a modern twist by placing the scarf over your head with the long side in the front then tie it in the back a little off center. When it comes to tying a scarf, two or three ties is generally a good idea so that the scarf stays in place.

For an easy and fun pirate look, lay the two tails over one shoulder with mismatching lengths. This scarf decorated with vintage rifles by Hermes is perfect for the pirate look; it will have you saying sc-arrr-f!

Here is another look. You can wrap a scarf around the back of your head and tie it in the front. Tie the knot two or three times and then either let the tails hang down or tuck them into the scarf. You can try using different lengths if you want to let the tails hang down, or just tuck them away.

This style gives you the Chiquita Banana look and this scarf is perfect for the look. The coconuts, bamboo, and turtle motif add a tropical touch to your outfit.

For another look, wrap a scarf around your head from the front towards the back. Bring the two ends around and to the front, then tie the tails in a knot twice on your forehead. You can then twist the ends together and tuck them into one side. This style is known as the twist knot. Try this colorful Gucci scarf to complete the look of an outfit. The orange and purple are a nice contrast and also feature a bamboo motif, but this time in brown.

The bow tie is another popular style.

Start by wrapping the scarf around your head from the back to the front and tie it just off center in the front twice. Now tuck the tails into the scarf and puff them out so they look like a bow tie. This silk Dior scarf is ideal for a fun bow tie look. The orange color is vibrant and also includes a unique texture. Not many scarves have texture; if you find one, buy it!

The bun style is also a popular way to wear a scarf.

Grab all your hair and wrap it into a loose bun on top of your head or just behind your head (Note: if your hair is really short, you can create a fake bun to pull off the same style). Next, place a scarf on your head with the long side in front, making sure it completely covers the bun. Then tie the scarf to secure it. Grab one end, wrap it around the bun, and then secure it underneath the scarf. Repeat on the other side. Push the scarf back a little on the front to reveal some hair and you’re good to go.

This is a great bun scarf as it has many details and the bun look will show off those details.

This next style is the perfect look for swimwear or beachwear. Place a scarf on your head with the long side in front again, tie the two ends twice high up on one side of your head just above your ear. The result should be a bold and flowing style that looks great with hoop earrings and a bathing suit. This multicolored fish motif scarf from Hermes will also look great with vintage hoop earrings and a bathing suit.

If you want to achieve a high bun, this next tie is right for you. Put your hair up in a bun, then place the scarf on your head and tie it on one side twice. You can pull it up to reveal some hair or pull it down towards your eyebrows. This will give you the gypsy look and this beautiful Saint Laurent multicolored scarf is perfect for the gypsy look.
You can take the previous look further by twisting the two ends you just tied twice together all the way down to the tips. Take the end of the twist and pull it through the scarf around your head, wrapping it around itself creating a bun on the side. Keep wrapping it until there is nothing left to wrap, then tuck in the ends to secure the bun in place. The bun should sit just above your ear.  Try this vintage Hermes scarf with blue and green carriages on an ivory background with a royal blue border.

If you’re wondering how to tie a silk scarf around your neck, it’s really no different than any other scarf, but silk scarves tend to be more delicate so be careful when you tie, twist, and tuck the scarf.
